But We saved him and the companions of the Ark, and We made the (Ark) a Sign for all peoples!
The commentators differ over what this means. Some hold that it means that Noah’s boat will remain on the side of the mountain for future generations to discover and take a lesson from it. Others say that Noah, who might have lived as long at six thousand years ago, was the first to develop the concept of a large cargo vessel and that the memory and knowledge of ship building would remain after him. Still a third group believes it is merely the story of Noah and the flood that has remained and enlivened the imaginations of peoples everywhere. Indeed, ancient Sumerian and Babylonian records also make mention of a time of floods, even as the Hebrews carried this story with them for ages.
